The English Premier League kicked off last weekend with a few surprising results, none more so than newly promoted Fulham holding the mighty Liverpool to a 2-2 draw while Brighton downed Manchester United 2-1, at Old Trafford!

The opening weekend predictions resulted in a 50% result for me, so I have decided to rope in some mates to see how the three of us fair not only against the actual results, but against each other as well. Glenn (ChippyBoy), Warryn (Woody) and myself (Batty) also partake in the annual OneBallZA Fantasy Premier League with ChippyBoy being the legend, Woody calling #WOut after the first few weeks before making some fortunate choices in the latter stages to suddenly being #WIn again, only for ChippyBoy to whip us all.

Well me? I just make up the numbers! So we will be making known our performances in the #FPL as well in this new In Your Space FeatureOne Ball ZA Corner!

Arsenal looked the part in their victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace on Friday evening before Fulham stunned Liverpool on the banks of the Thames at Craven Cottage in the first Saturday game. Bournemouth’s return to the Premier League heaped more pressure on Steven Gerrard as they won 2-0 over the Villains at the Vitality Stadium.

Leeds won an entertaining match against Wolves while Newcastle did first time round what they couldn’t do in the first 19 games of last season – they won, beating newly promoted Nottingham Forest 2-0. Spurs downed Southampton 4-1 to go top of the log before Chelsea laboured to a 1-0 win over Frank Lampard’s Everton.

The weekend was rounded off with Brentford holding Leicester to a 2-2 draw at the King Power Stadium while City began their defense with a 2-0 win over West Ham. But the biggest surprise came at Old Trafford where Brighton won 2-1, scoring all three goals themselves.

And so we head off into the second week of games, and here are our predictions:

Predictions for matches 13 – 15 August 2022

Woody and ChippyBoy have always battled out for the title of One Ball ZA Legend, with Glenn almost always coming out on top – to Woody’s dislike. Me, well, the first few seasons was me just picking a team, making a few transfers during the season and let the chips fall where they may – which resulted in me carrying the wooden spoon, or more appropriately, the wooden spoon medal. Last season I played a tad more, broke the 2000-point mark – whoopy for me – but came fourth in a group of about seven, or eight, or nine – hell I cannot remember, that was so last year!

This year I want to do better, have to do better, just to have the wooden spoon jokes and sarcasm halt for just a while. The first game week (GW) started well, but of course, my captain didn’t score, while the others had their captain score which put me on the backfoot from the get-go. Anyway, I hope to do better in the coming weeks and I hope the competition have half their team struck down with some horrible, non-life-threatening disease, just to give me a chance.
